Bij Fresco Flowers, lid van Circular Plastics Alliance, staat duurzaamheid centraal, ook in deze drukke periode. Dit jaar verwerkt Fresco Flowers ongeveer 25 miljoen rozen van 12 kwekers in Kenia. Het aandeel rozen uit het buitenland, met name uit Kenia, groeit snel door gunstige factoren zoals het klimaat, de ligging dicht bij de evenaar, uitgebreide zonuren en effici\u00ebnte logistieke verbindingen met Europa. Wat Fresco Flowers onderscheidt, is hun streven naar duurzaamheid tijdens het hele proces. Van eerlijke arbeidspraktijken en milieubescherming bij hun internationaal gecertificeerde kwekers tot het verpakken van de rozen in gerecyclede plastic hoezen om het vaasleven te verlengen en schade te voorkomen. Alleen al tijdens Valentijnsdag komt er ongeveer 22,5 ton plastic in omloop. Daarom roept Fresco Flowers exporteurs op om hun plastic bloemen- en plantenhoezen in te zamelen en te recyclen via Circular Bags, een innovatief initiatief dat een gesloten kringloop voor plastic verpakkingen mogelijk maakt. Het ingezamelde plastic wordt omgezet in korrels en gebruikt voor de productie van nieuwe, duurzame bloemenhoezen. Daarnaast heeft Fresco Flowers een recyclingcentrum opgezet waar verschillende afvalstromen worden gescheiden, waaronder groenafval, plastic, papier, ijzer en restafval. Dit alles draagt bij aan een groenere, duurzamere toekomst voor de sierteeltsector.
