A circular proposition with Lamme for KLM

70% recycled plastic: reducing & communicating environmental impact / From 70% recycled to broader impact

Opdracht: Creating a circular airline proposition

Lamme Textile Management, a family business with nearly 200 years of history in the laundry sector, is actively committed to sustainability. From water reuse to textile recycling, environmentally conscious practices are an integral part of their operations. In partnership with the Circular Plastics Alliance and KIVO Plastic Verpakkingen, Lamme already achieved 70% recycled content in the packaging of airline blankets through a closed loop (collecting, recycling and reusing airline plastic). This led to savings of about 71 tons of CO2 at their client KLM.

This innovation fitted Lamme very well, which made them want to take more sustainable steps for and with their clients.

Together, we looked at what Lamme is already doing in terms of sustainability, and what other opportunities they have to increase sustainability with their clients.

From Challenge to Circular Packaging Strategy

As a partner in the aviation, hotel, and restaurant industries, Lamme Textile Management uses large volumes of plastic packaging for its reusable textile solutions. The challenge was clear: how to make this packaging more sustainable—reducing dependency on virgin plastics—without compromising functionality and efficiency.

Through the Circular Plastics Alliance program, various partners in the value chain were brought together to enable circular innovation. This led to a collaboration between Lamme and KIVO Plastic Verpakkingen, focused on creating more sustainable packaging. The result was a unique film made of 60% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material and 40% virgin material—later improved to a 70/30 ratio. At just 15 microns thick, the film combines reduced environmental impact with maintained quality and usability.

From Insight to Implementation

We helped translate technical data into practical insights, enabling Lamme to communicate the environmental value of Lamme’s existing innovation to their customers. We also determined and communicated what other materials could be recycled, and calculated the potential environmental impact reductions.

These insights also feed into Lamme’s broader sustainability vision, supporting informed choices across the supply chain and helping customers align with their own environmental ambitions.

We came to a clear circular proposition, created a communication deck and implementation structure for Lamme to be able to take sustainability further.

Looking Ahead

For Lamme and KIVO, this is just the beginning. The ambition is to push toward packaging with 80% recycled content or more. Through continued innovation and collaboration, both companies remain committed to building a more circular future.

“The Circular Plastics Alliance played a crucial role in bringing the right partners together and accelerating this innovation. Their guidance in impact analysis and return logistics helped us take a significant step toward a more sustainable packaging solution.”
